The Hueys in The New Jumper by Oliver Jeffers is a children’s book that is a great read for adults too. It is an older offering in the rich tapestry of Jeffers’ works that should be dusted off now and then, and given some air. It is a perfect allegory for human nature and relationships among a group of people at any given time or place. It is also a metaphor for living out the courage of your convictions in the face of criticism and at the risk of being ostracized. After all, belonging to a group needn’t mean suppressing your personal interests or niche pursuits. While there can be worthwhile benefits to the shared values and interests of a given community, one must be careful not to let a desire to belong become a substitute for self-actualization and confidence. When you’re brave enough to express and expose who you are – you just might inspire others to reveal their best, unique selves. The New Jumper reminds us that fully exploring and becoming your authentic self is the best way to substantively contribute to a group.
