We begin our journey at INTERNATIONAL BOY in praise of dictionaries. There is nothing more important than a solid educational foundation. It is our conviction that every person should have at least one, but ideally several good dictionaries; beginning with one’s mother tongue and also of other languages being learned. Learning to read and write are the first steps we take on a lifelong journey to engaging the world we inhabit; often with a parent, grandparent, sibling or teacher as our guide. As we live and grow, there is nothing more important than being able to communicate with clarity and efficiency. It makes sense then, that a dictionary should be an early shelf staple, a worthwhile life investment, just like a well-rounded education or a musical instrument. It is a particularly important survival cornerstone for the multi-lingual household. This year (2020), Oxford University Press released its 10th revised edition of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) for learners of English. Whether you’re teaching the newest member of your family to read and say their first words, a student of English as a foreign language or honing your writing skills as a career writer or translator, this new edition with over 60,000 words will serve as the cornerstone of your library for several generations. Available online, in paperback and hardcover versions, it includes example usage sentences and Oxford 3000™ and Oxford 5000™ core vocabulary world lists.
